"We wanted a place our family could enjoy for generations and we're hoping other families will, too."
Lonesome Whale Ranch is located in the Texas Hill Country north of Lampasas. Our ranch is low fence, you will be hunting wild animals that roam freely throughout the hill country.
Our land was purchased from a larger several thousand-acre ranch that saw no hunting for decades because it was home to champion racehorses. The owner, for good reason, did not allow shooting or hunting near his prized horses.
Before that, this area of Texas was known for two very different things - relaxation and outlaws. Law enforcement and rangers across the state dreaded losing the trail of outlaws on the run near Lampasas, they often found refuge and hiding in the vast, varying landscape. The town was also known for its seven spring-fed mineral pools - the first discovered in Texas. So for tourists and bandits of the 19th century alike, it became a favorite destination.
Today, a large spring-fed pond, shaped like a whale tail, covers roughly six acres of our land and is stocked with bass and catfish. This uniquely shaped pond inspired the name of Lonesome Whale Ranch. There are three smaller stock tanks and a year-round spring-fed creek that flows through the ranch from West to East into the Lampasas River.
In addition to these spring-fed water sources, our ranch includes several large ridges and constant terrain changes. You’ll see a mix of cedar trees, towering oaks and pecans, high ridges with views for miles, and several fields planted with oats. We have added several strategically placed feeders and several natural food plots that help the ranch flourish with wildlife.
The most important thing to know about us is that we come from a long line of Texans and we're proud to continue that tradition. Our great grandparents saw the promise in Texas and raised our grandparents in San Antonio and The Valley. We graduated from Texas A&M University and Tarleton State University before getting married. As a USAF veteran, from a long history of veterans, John has visited some beautiful areas of the country, but we purchased this land because nothing beats the Texas Hill Country. We're excited to share our love for this state and its land with more families.
We do not currently offer lodging but hope to in the future. There are several very close lodging opportunities that we are happy to recommend if needed.
